Testimonials:

Steve Sedergreen is a national treasure. He is a generous and committed teacher and it is wonderful to see his knowledge distilled so engagingly in his new book Start Playing Jazz Piano Now! The book is an outcome of his lifelong experience performing and teaching in the field. Over the years I have had the privilege of witnessing Steve's capacity to listen deeply and respond creatively to the songs, stories and artwork of Indigenous people in Asutralia and in Canada. His mastery of jazz is richly demonstrated in his professional practice and his approach to conveying his knowledge is now accessible to studnets throughout this new book. I thoroughly recommend it to all people who love jazz and are ready to learn. You are in good hands.

In any musician's life, there are key people who help open their minds, teach them to listen, to love their instrument, and to let the magic come in. Steve Sedergreen has been one of those spirits in my life, and he has helped shape and inspire a creative and successful community of young musicians in Melbourne.

When we were teenagers, Steve taught us about listening to each other, respecting the song (the story), about forgetting conventions, playing with an open mind, practising hard, and enjoying music by giving. The simplicity of his ethos, combined with his energy and generosity provided a template for how music could be played, which for many of us was a life and career changing revelation.

In this book, Steve creates an introduction to jazz through performance. He encourages the student to discover harmony, shapes, and ideas by playing rather than theorising, and introduces some key repertoire to get them on their way. There is a practicality in the approach that allows the individuality of the musician to start shining through. It is a great learning tool, written by a true teacher, performer and lover of music.
