Steve and Mal Sedergreen's Mistaken Identity

Print

Steve Sedergreen – piano
Mal Sedergreen – saxophones
Nick Haywood – bass
Ted Vining – drums

Jazz pianist & educator Steve Sedergreen first started the outfit Mistaken Identity in the late 80s with his brother Malcolm, multisaxophonist (alto, tenor and soprano) and together they have produced several LP and CD albums (the most recent release a Stevie Wonder tribute called, Wondering). Over the years the band offered many line-ups – the current one including both Steve & Mal of course, with Ted Vining on drums and Nick Haywood on double-bass.

“Mistaken Identity is built around the obvious rapport between the Sedergreen brothers, pianist Steve and saxophonist Mal. Spontaneity, passion and a spirit of inclusiveness have long been the hallmarks of the band. They have always sought to make their jazz accessible and spirited, and they succeed on their fifth album, which presents appealing arrangements of the songs of Stevie Wonder. They work well as vehicles for jazz-blowing by the tight-knit band.” – ADRIAN JACKSON (well-known jazz writer and artistic director of Wangaratta Festival of Jazz).

Over the past few years, pianist Steve Sedergreen has completed a master's degree, a book based on his teaching methodology and an intense period of personal and musical development (including time spent in Canada and Australia working with indigenous musicians). But he has also remained committed to his creative partnership with brother Malcolm Sadergreen - and, in particular, the ensemble they have co-led for the past two decades. Mistaken Identity began life when the brothers were still in their teens, and has remained a musical constant throughout their professional careers.

Spontaneity, passion and a spirit of inclusiveness have long been hallmarks of the band, which maintains a loyal following as its members continue to expand their mainly original repertoire, augmented by jazz standards and the occasional pop song. The band's current line-up features Steve and Malcolm (on piano and saxophones respectively), the hard-swinging bassist Nick Haywood and veteran drummer Ted Vining.
