Accessible jazz from seasoned Melbourne musicians
Well-established Melbourne jazz duo Steve Sedergreen and his brother Malcolm have come out with a spirited album. This is jazz at its beret-wearing, finger-snapping and toe-tapping best. Having said that, it is jazz, and this two-disc recording is clearly designed for fans of the genre. However, these seasoned jazz artists flex their musical muscles with numerous piano, saxophone and drum solos that even those who are new to jazz could enjoy. Their jazz reinvention of the classic Beatles song Eleanor Rigby is a great way to start the album. As it progresses the complexity of the rhythms increases and by the third track I found myself out of my depth. Even though I’m not the greatest jazz enthusiast I could still appreciate the talent of the performers. If I did listen to jazz regularly, this is definitely an album I could get used to.
